Donate to Kenyan Famine Relief

THE PROBLEM

Kenya is experiencing its worst drought since the 1960s. The lack of rain creates problems that amplify each other in deadly feedback loops; when their crops won't grow and their livestock starve, farmers and herders have no source of income and cannot buy food to feed their families. The entire economic foundation for the lives of millions dries up more every day.

What BEADS is Doing to Help

BEADS for Education is pursuing a diversified approach to famine relief.

Food Delivery

The most direct method of famine relief, our donors support the delivery of food supplies directly to the families of our sponsored girls and to the drastically affected Maasai community. Because we buy in bulk, the cost of feeding one person is only $0.50 per day.

Sponsorship

All BEADS-sponsored girls attend boarding schools, and three daily meals are included in their school fees. Sponsoring a girl not only ensures she will be adequately fed, but takes the pressure off of her family to keep her fed.

Alternative Famine Solutions

BEADS is working with some local Maasai to develop inexpensive, practical methods of preserving meat so that in times of drought, herders will not starve along with their animals. Materials, outreach, education, and training on these methods will help pastoralists to help themselves.
